Those recommendations are based on how tipping customs vary by location and business type. In some states, the tipped minimum wage means gratuity is a larger part of income. In others, a flat rate is more common. A bar with fast ticket times is different from a salon with an hour-long appointment. We keep that context in the recommendation so you have a number that feels right, not random.

Why we built it
Most tip calculators do the math, but they skip the part people actually stress about: how much is normal here? Is 18% low? Is 22% too much? Should I tip differently for delivery in winter? We kept hearing the same thing from friends who travel for work, move to a new city, or just want to feel good about what they leave.
Tipster Calculator started as a small side project to answer that question cleanly. No login, no data grab, no banner telling you to download an app. Open it, get your number, and put your phone away. The goal is not to maximize or minimize tips. It is to help you tip fairly and confidently so the person who served you feels appreciated and you feel at ease.

How recommendations work
We maintain a dataset covering all 50 US states, DC, and key international markets across five business types. Each combination gets a baseline drawn from hospitality guidance, labor context, and common local practice. The range widens for exceptional or below-average service. It is guidance, not a rule. Venues vary, and you know the context best.
